Grade 2       Term 1  Understanding Earth and Space Systems Air and water in the environment -Air and water are a major part of the environment -Living things need air and water to survive. -Changes to air and water affect living things and the environment. -Our actions affect the quality of air and water, and its ability to sustain life.	Grade 3        Term 1 Understanding Earth and Space Systems Soil in the Environment -       soil is made up of living and non living things -       the composition, characteristics, condition of soil determine its capacity for sustaining life -       soil is an essential source of life and nutrients for many living things       -      living things, including humans interact with soils and can cause positive and negative changes
Term 1 Understanding Matter and Energy Properties of liquids and solids -       Materials that exist as liquids and solids have special properties -         Liquids and solids interact in different ways. -        Some liquids and solids can be harmful to us and the environment	Term 1 Understanding Matter and Energy Forces causing movement -There are several types of forces that cause movement. -Forces cause objects to speed up, slow down, or change direction through direct contact or through interaction at a distance. -Forces in nature, such as high winds or water can have a significant impact on humans and the environment, and need to be regarded with respect.
Term 2 Understanding Life Systems Growth and Changes in Animals -Animals have distinct characteristics. - Humans are animals. -There are similarities and difference among different kinds of animals. -Humans need to protect animals and the places where they live.	Term 2 Understanding Life Systems Growth and Changes in Plants -Plants have distinct characteristics - There are similarities and differences among various types of plants -Places are the primary source of food for humans - Humans need to protect plants and their habitats. Plants are important to the planet.
Term 2 Understanding Structures and Mechanisms Movement -Movement is a change in position of an object. -Simple machines help objects to move -Mechanisms are made up of one or more simple machines. -Simple machines and mechanisms make life easier and/or more enjoyable for humans.	Term 2 Understanding structures and mechanisms Strong and Stable Structures -A structure has both form and function -Structures are affected by forces acting on them -Structures need to be strong and stable to be useful. -
